Jack Dudman (Born?- Died?), was an American educator. He served as dean of students of Reed College.
Memories:
Jack Dudman, dean of students, was an unexpected inspiration. He was always there with emergency help, even when we were self-destructive. - Howard Rheingold '68, from Reed Magazine February 2001, "Looking Back".
I had the pre-dean Dudman as a Math professor in my sophomore year (1956-7), and can't think of anything memorable concerning Dudman. My only impression that he was more "normal" most Math professors. In my freshman year, I had Joe Roberts, an archetypical Math professor, as I have since found out. The problem is that mathematicians are turned on my high abstraction, which leaves most of us cold. In my day there were the Parker-Williams debates representing opposing conceptions of the Physics and Math Departments concerning what kind of Math should be taught to undergraduates. Should rigor (the Math view) or vigor (the Physics view) be emphasized? Since Departments control their own appointments, you know who won this one. -- Albert Himoe
