Reed Alumni Cafe FAQ

This is how the guidelines* are described...

What are the superpowers of hosting?

Hosts sign people up for posting privileges; the guidelines allow reading  to anyone registered at The New Cafe. The New Cafe runs on Motet software, which is on the tubes that connect us.  The Reed alumni online context, and its enactment, was collectively developed by Bryan Higgens, Utne Reader, John Sheehy, Howard Rheingold, the Alumni Service Committee at Reed College, and, most importantly, by Us.

Anyway, hosts, as constrained by the community guidelines* as supported by the conferees via their likewise volunteering oversight committtee, have the superpowers to:

  • permit a New Cafe user to post on the con
  • constrain a New Cafe user from posting to the con
  • archive, delete, and rename topics
  • change topic background and font colors
  • augment a topic header or footer with text, graphics, and fun html, with the agreement of a topic's creator or by general consensus
  •

Can you tell when people are online?

Hosts don't have special powers beyond thos of any New Cafe user to see when any other user last visited the con by clicking the user's name to see the user's profile, e.g.,

"Last visited Sat, 10 Mar 2007 23:15:20 PST"

What information do old hosts pass on to new hosts?

Their trust, which involves their experience, which is a knowing in flawed witness of those who have been exiled from the alumni cafe.
